Been enjoying my time over at Tonari Gumi working with their members and elders on a new project that we just launched called Shako Club.
Shako club (or social club) is a project initiated with the grunt gallery and created in collaboration with members of Tonari Gumi (Vancouver’s Japanese Community Volunteers Association), an association serving primarily Japanese Canadian seniors and new immigrants to Canada. The project considers collaborative, improvisational, performative methods of meaning-making through food and stories while in residence for 3 months at Tonari Gumi, working in their commercial kitchen. As a group we will create recipes and culinary sculptures that acknowledge equally the influence of cultural background, history, taste, aesthetic value, and an abiding love of snacks.
Through an ongoing series of workshops and taste experiments, the members of Shako Club will craft interpretations of the bento box (a traditional Japanese meal set containing a selection of small dishes) that combine culinary and sculptural sensibilities with stories, memories and advice, selected with care.
For more information on signing up for a bento, read and fill out the questionnaire.
