Sonata in 22 Movements

Multi-media performance, storytelling, puppetry
40 minutes running time

(in production)

Sonata in Twenty Two Movements incorporates sound and puppetry-based objects in a mixed media installation that will result in a performance between myself and my 83 year old mother and translating over 24 years of letter correspondence inside our family from Japan to Canada and vice versa. Between piano score, contemporary sound, puppetry, choreography and animation – this performance bridges together translation and mistranslation, a relationship between caregiver and aging parent, aging parent and daughter, and ultimately a way to which we make sense of our future selves and aged selves as we look back at the past. As time passes, we remember and reacquaint ourselves with the cast of characters we left behind to make sacrifices for change.

Performers: Shion Carter, Shana Wolfe, Juolin Lee with Cindy Mochizuki and Tazuko Mochizuki.
